Conrad Madden Achieves the Quadruple in Warrenpoint Tennis Closed Tournament!
Warrenpoint Tennis club held their annual closed tournament over the last 2 weeks. Wild wind in the first week led to some difficult matches but glorious sunshine has prevailed over the last few days to bring a joyful end to the Tournament.
2 people had stand out performances and on finals day were trying to achieve club history.
Conrad Madden entered the Main Singles, Masters Singles (50+), Mixed Doubles and Men’s Doubles and was victorious in them all. I am given to understand that this is a first for the club, not least because the masters is a new event. Conrad had to battle up and coming Sean Gibney in the men’s singles and in the masters had a decisive win over John Richmond. In the Men’s Doubles he played with Kieran Campbell against the highly experienced Derek Laverty who was partnering with Sean Gibney. A very tense match which again resulted in a championship tiebreak.
Alison Dunne (last years Masters Singles champion) entered the main singles event this year and had a very exciting final against Lucy Cumming but clinched the victory by 2 points in the deciding tiebreak set. In the Doubles she reached the finals of both Mixed Doubles and Ladies Doubles. In the former she and Eamon Connolly were narrowly defeated in the championship tiebreak by Conrad with his partner Deirdre Dinsmore. In the ladies doubles she again had to play Lucy Cumming along with her mother Mary McGeown (this years Masters winner) and the pair proved too strong for Alison and her partner Margaret O’Hare. So the Triple was not to be.
In the ladies masters singles competition there were more tight matches in the round robin but finally it came down to Carol O’Flynn rivalling Mary Mc Geown in the last match. Mary quickly took the lead with powerful efficient ground strokes against Carols penchant for net play. Carol did fight back to bring the second set to a decider tiebreak but Mary won the day.
There were some difficult wipeouts for newbies versus seeded players but the plates were closely contested with both Mixed and Men’s Doubles plates coming down to a 3rd set decider tiebreak.
Thanks to Warrenpoint Harbour Authority and Lucy Cumming for providing some of the prizes and to everyone who helped with refreshments on the 2 Finals days.
